The Rare Star Ruby

The Rare Star Ruby

BEN WHIDBY

One of the rarest and most desired gems in the world is the star ruby. The star ruby gets its name from the remarkable six-rayed star that glistens in the stone's surface as light passes through. It's a truly remarkable phenomena in the world of colored gems.

Origins

The star-like effect of this precious gem is due to small needle-like inclusions throughout the stone. Inclusions, which are small imperfections in a gem, are usually seen as negative. But in the star ruby's case they make it special and rare. The largest deposits of these unique stones have been mined in Myanmar, formerly known as Mogok, although only around 1% are gem quality.

Mythology

In ancient times, star rubies were thought to be very powerful, bringing those who wore the precious stone protection. Travelers used the rubies as a guiding star, believing it kept them safe on their journeys. Star rubies were also said to have healing properties which could de-stress the mind, cure insomnia and hysteria and relieve tension in the body.

What to Look For

In the modern day, the value of the star ruby goes beyond the metaphysical and depends on many factors, not just the stone’s carat weight. Body color, visibility and intensity of the stone’s star play a huge role in how the gemstone is valued. The finest star rubies have a sharp, six-rayed star centered in the stone. But just having this star alone does not make the star ruby valuable. The best stones are also intense in body color. The most desirable color is blood pigeon, a pure red with a hint of blue or violet.
